Flip-Flop Day

I'm prone to plantar fasciitis and have learned to only wear sturdy supportive shoes.
this is why i can't go back to flat thongs from Vionics or Archies - i think they're podiatrist created or at least approved and the right footwear makes so much of a difference to plantar fascia pain (and achille's tendon) - no i'm not sponsored by Archies, just a convert and someone that can't understand why people think Birkenstocks are comfortable because they are absolutely not to me

I'm only flipflopping around my house, at work it is not very handy :-) Just bought a new pair a the canary Islands when i was on holiday there a few weeks ago, so sad that there weren't any other colors with my size, just love them

I love flip flops because it means it's summertime and also they are so easy to slip on and off. My current favorites are by Clarks, but I also have a couple pairs of Tevas that are nice and broken in and comfy too. I can't do the cheapo $3 ones from Old Navy anymore. Too flat and not comfy!

I live in South Florida so I'm frequently in flip flops. I've sworn by Reefs since college and they are a million times better than the cheap plastic ones that everyone used to be obsessed with. I think I'm on my third pair(?) in 20 years - should probably be my fourth but we don't really leave the house much these days.

These flip flops have seen some adventures, including the time I was "only going to take a few pictures at the trailhead" and ended up running down the Wild Bird Trail at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to see some roseate spoonbills. Not going to recommend running in flip flops but these didn't blow out or fall off. (Definitely wrecked a pair of cheap ones in high school doing similar.)

I going to have to look these up. I tried on some vionic ones once but didn’t like the fit. I had to go narrow to get Birks to fit and they do take a bit to wear into.

Sounds like a fun holiday!

I think the old navy ones are made differently now, as my last few are not nearly as comfortable as older ones, which sadly are almost worn out.

Those are pretty cute. I haven’t seen any in this style for a long time. I had some similar ages ago.

I hear you on being loyal to one brand. I'm that way with Dr. Scholl's. Over 30 years ago I bought a pair of Dr. Scholl's Velcro close tennis shoes while in Florida visiting my parents. They were heaven on my feet after wearing heels to work all day. After that I only bought Dr. Scholl's tennis shoes. Other brands just weren't as comfortable. Then I realized they made all different types of shoes. Actually my "thongless" sandals that I like are Dr. Scholl's. I also have some of their sandals with heel and ankle straps. I've got loafers, slide-on shoes and even ankle boots for winter from them. I wore my favorite pair of ankle boots for my trip to Cape Cod and with all the walking we did, my feet never hurt at the end of the day. For my trip to Maine and Canada last Aug/Sept, I wore a pair of Dr. Scholl's tennis shoes that are actually sold as work shoes for those that are on their feet all day. This is also when I was still healing from the avulsion fracture in my foot. Even with that, my feet never hurt at the end of a long day of sightseeing/walking. I did ice my foot in the evening because of the fracture (this type of fracture is treated just like a sprain) and after wearing an ankle support all day. I plan on wearing Dr. Scholl's tennis shoes on my Canadian Rockies trip although I did get a pair of Merrell Walking Shoes for one specific day. I wanted a shoe with ankle support that could be worn in the summer for when I walk on the Ice Fields.

When I see Dr. Scholl's, I am immediately taken back in time to those wood ones with the "bumps" in them and a single strap (with some kind of buckle) that I used to wear. Today I think of those and wonder, how did I think so were comfortable -- there was no cushion. I have a pair of slip on boots now that are Dr. Scholl's -- I don't wear them often in the winter, but they are comfortable.

Like Justine @bellbird I only wear supportive flip flops. I have Vionics and Reef but now I feel like I should try to Archies! For most of my life, I didn't wear flip flops because I didn't like the feeling of the strap between my toes but at some point, I got used to it and now it doesn't bother me at all.

I remember summers when that's all my sister and I would wear. I tried on a pair the other day just for fun and I have no idea how we ever thought those were comfortable! Plus the violent slapping of the wood into your heel on every step is so unpleasant. :D

A word of warning. If you are in a pinch, NEVER buy a pair of flip flops from the dollar store. They will not make it out the front door on your feet. Something will snap off.

it's fairly aussie to live in thongs (sorry, can't think of them as flip flops - that to me conjures my son walking thru the house when he was like 4 or 5y.o in flippers when he was impatient to go swimming)
i'm not good at barefeet or just socks and i wear a cheap pair of thongs in the shower (i don't care how minimally people recommend packing for travel, a pair of thongs is a non-negotiable for me), but otherwise i'm all about arch-support thongs these days, i used to swear by Vionics brand but now i live in Archies in summer

Bonus fun fact: on Australia Day, as it is controversially called these days given Aust was already inhabited, it is quite common for community gatherings to have Thong Toss competitions (it's how it sounds, whoever flings a thong the furthest is the winner - it's a lot less risk than javelin or shotput!)
You could still put an eye out with one of those fast-flung flip-flops!

i have been eyeing some Teva hike/beach sandals, they look like they have good arch support but i'm not sure how hard they are - there are similar Merrell ones so it's a bit of a toss-up until i can be bothered to go try stuff on again

I can't comment on Dr Scholls specifically (i may have had some like orthotic-y inserts from them previously but not shoes), i am a Merrell convert though and i just ordered my daughter a pair of the same sneakers as mine while they were still on sale - she was a die-hard Brooks fan and i used Mizuno for sneakers for probably a decade but TKMax (i think it's TJMax in the US) converted me on Merrell so i hope for both of us that they live up to the hype re: walking. Best of luck healing!

There's another very similar company to Archies, I think they're called Lightfeet but the strap placement didn't quite suit me but I'm just glad there's more companies out there making non-flat thongs now. (My shower travel thongs are FitFlops that I read about years ago & thought they were worth a try...yeah, nah, doesn't compare, not sure what the fuss was about)

I think I heard of those FitFlops too and came across them and didn't get the hype either. I love "experiencing" the far reach of this community over such everyday mundane things like thong vs flip-flop.

I love Teva's and Merrells both. I think Merrells might have a slightly better arch support in them, but I can walk a decent distance in both types. :agree

They have so much more available these days. Some very stylish shoes as well. I do still have a pair of the wooden ones. I don't wear them outside the house but they are good for going out to the mailbox in the summer months.
