I do think about things besides food. Sometimes.

How do you make spaghetti? Sauce from a jar (I admit to this sometimes)? Some old italian recipe that simmers for hours?

I'll share the recipe I use. I like that it's quick, and cheap. I don't usually make the meatballs, but when I do, I brown them first.

    Julia's Spaghetti & Meatballs

    Sauce:
1 (28 oz) can Crushed Tomatoes
1 (28 oz) can Tomato Puree
    1 cup water
    1/4 cup Olive Oil
4-6 cloves minced garlic (depending on palate)
    1 tsp dried basil
    1 Tbsp sugar
    2 tsp Salt (preferably Kosher)
    Fresh ground pepper to taste

Sauté garlic and olive oil in a large saucepan(with cover for later) over medium/low heat. Do not brown garlic. Takes approximately 2-3 minutes.
Add both cans of tomatoes and water, turn up heat to medium/high and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add basil, sugar, salt and pepper. Cook uncovered until the sauce begins to bubble. After the sauce bubbles, turn down to low. Cover pot and let simmer.

If you decide to make it without meatballs, cook for 30 minutes

    Meatballs:
    1/2 lb of ground beef
    1/2 lb of ground pork
1/2-3/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese
1 cup of fresh bread crumbs(just use some slices of bread from home and
run them in a blender or processor)
    1 egg
    1 garlic clove minced
    1 tsp dried oregano
    salt and pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients above and mix well with your hands Form small size balls (approx.1-2 tbsp). Don't make the meatballs too big as they will not cook thoroughly. Should yield approximately 22-24 meatballs. Drop meatballs into simmering marina sauce above. Cook for a total of 45-50 minutes. Do not over cook! The key to this sauce is minimal cooking for a fresh flavor.

I just made a huge batch yesterday! It was soooo yummy! My recipe is similar to Angie's except I don't make meatballs. I do add in those frozen spaghetti veggies and I used diced tomatoes and Bravo Sauce. When I make a batch I usually invite someone over since there's so much. But I didn't last night since hubby was hunting. The 4 of use didn't even make a dent in it. But that's fine since I'll freeze it and have enough to make a big lasagna and probably have spaghetti another time. :)

Sauce from a jar - doctored up. I add all sorts of veggies and usually browned ground beef or sausage. I will make my own on occasion, but I've gotten away from it for too long. Might just give your shared recipe a try, Angie!

I can't get my hubby's Great-grand-mother's recipe right, which upsets me beyond believe!!!! So I put a canned pasta sauce and add a pound of beef or pork or mix and put it in the crockpot all day with tons of extra seasoning. (This last time I added a bit of BBQ instead of sugar... it was freaking delish!)

I buy the huge cans of tomato sauce from Sam's Club and make my own sauce with that and tomato paste. I also make a couple of pizza's worth of pizza sauce at the same time. And then I freeze it all in batches.

My sauce is simple...since DD doesn't like chunky stuff in her sauce.
If I'm just making one batch I typically use
    2 cans of tomato sauce
    1 can tomato paste
Italian seasoning that I mix myself from dried herbs
    Garlic powder and onion powder
    Salt and Pepper
and about a lb. of ground beef (also usually pre-cooked and frozen separately in portions)

I really have no idea how much of the herbs and such that I use...I just add it until it tastes right.

This is the pizza sauce I make (in case anyone is interested)

I freeze this as well in two separate ziplocs since I only make one pizza at a time for the three of us.

Sauce from a jar, mostly because I haven't yet learned to make a sauce. I'm going to try yours Angie! It sounds plenty simple and yummy.

I just made spaghetti (DD calls it skbetti) last night!

I season the ground beef and then dump Ragu Garden Combination sauce on top. Voila! :giggle

I like my pasta with some fresh basil, olive oil and parmesan cheese. My mom makes pretty good sauce - so sometimes I'll have that. The only kind of jarred sauce I like is vodka sauce. :)

I hate spaghetti, and we have it once a week because it's so cheap and easy. From a bag, even worse than a jar.

Neither one of my children would ever eat spaghetti sauce. If I use any it's for lasagna and it's from a jar with a little extra oregano and basil in it.

Well, if you couldn't tell from my Stovetop solution to stuffing... I use Prego for spaghetti sauce. If I get really fancy I add mushrooms... from a can. :) I'm all kinds of gourmet here baby!

Mine is VERY similar to Angie's, minus the olive oil.. I think I'll add that in next time. Lots of basil, diced orange and yellow peppers, and mushrooms. I don't do meatballs very often, but brown some lean ground beef or ground turkey and add that in. Lately I've been making it in the crock pot and letting it simmer for the day.

Oh Karen... Canned mushrooms are never ok. I love mushrooms... Those things in the can are awful.

I prefer to make sketti from scratch but haven't in awhile b/c DH is a picky eater and freaks over all the yummy good stuff that is normally in my spaghetti. I like to put big chunks of fresh zucchini, mushrooms, squash, and tomato in my sauce. All of those are no-no's in DH book. I only get to cook the good stuff when I am visiting family. LOL!

My husband wouldn't be eating if he acted like that. I make what I make. Eat it or no.

always jar from a can. and sometimes i add a can of diced tomatoes. usually add some herbs or whatever, but not always. and it works for us.

meatballs i almost always make from scratch, but i'm just as inclined to skip the meatballs & just brown the meat for 'meat sauce' instead.
