I have asked A Whimsical Adventure's Creative Team for some questions for Anja to answer. Let's get to know her better! Q: Do you have a specific or preferred time to design (morning, noon, evening, night), or do you do it spontaneously? A: I pretty much work all day—there’s rarely a day when I don’t work at all. Honestly, I work too much, even on weekends unless we have something planned. I wake up early, partly because of my sleep issues. But there’s something peaceful about working when everything is completely silent. I love that quiet. I usually work until around 6 in the evening, unless I have an appointment, something else to do, or just no inspiration (which happens too). So, yeah—pretty long days! I do take a break around noon, usually from 12 to 2, to eat, do some household chores, and step away from the screen for a bit. Q: How did you decide to become a designer? A: It started back in 2011 when I was looking for inspiration for my final project in graphic design school. I stumbled upon a digital scrapbooking site and had no idea what it was, but it immediately caught my attention. I had just finished learning Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and I thought, I need to come back to this. This is what I want to do with my photos. I think the very first kit I ever bought was from ScrapGirls! I quickly became obsessed and joined several creative teams, but before long, I felt the urge to create my own designs. In November 2015, I opened my Etsy shop—and now, here we are, 10 years later! Q: How long have you been a designer? A: Well, that was kind of answered in the last question! Q: What inspires your products? A: Pretty much anything, really. I’ve always been a huge fan of fantasy and sci-fi—it’s been a lifelong love. Maybe it’s a form of escapism? I don’t know, but fantasy worlds like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones are my absolute favorites. I’m also drawn to mystical and spiritual themes, like what I explored in my Wheel of the Year series. Those deeper, symbolic elements really fascinate me and often find their way into my work. Everything I create has a story behind it—a concept that ties it all together. I find it hard to describe my own style, but I think this comes close: a blend of shabby elegance with vintage influences, featuring muted colors, aged textures, and an intentional imperfection that makes designs feel timeworn and full of character. I’m drawn to fairytales, fantasy, and spiritual symbolism, always aiming to spark imagination and add a little magic to every collection. Q: Your characters are so creative. Do you base them on folklore, legends, or pure imagination? A: A bit of both! I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to details—if something exists in folklore or mythology, I like to research it first. I want to make sure I capture the key features and typical traits of that creature or character. But sometimes, if something doesn’t exist (yet!), that’s when my imagination takes over. I look at both existing vintage public domain images and what I can bring to life through AI. It’s always a mix of research, creativity, and what’s possible with the tools I have. I apply that same level of detail to other things too—if I’m making a spider, it’s going to have eight legs, not six. If it’s a frog, it’s going to have the right number of toes. Rodents, birds, anatomy in general—I always make sure the details are correct before I finalize anything. It’s important to me that the foundations are accurate, fantasy or not. Q: Do you have a favorite color? A: Not really… but I do tend to gravitate toward colors that feel aged, faded, or rich. There’s something about those tones that just speaks to me. Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? A: I live in a quiet Belgian village with my husband, daughter, and two rescue cats, surrounded by meadows and a forest. I love living here, but if I could pick anywhere? Probably Norway or Sweden. I’ve been following a TV series where a Belgian journalist visits Belgians who moved to Norway, and wow… the landscapes, the peace, the space! In Belgium, we live so close together, and I really don’t like hot summer temperatures. I could totally see myself in a cozy cabin in a snowy landscape, with everything I need around me so I wouldn’t have to go outside much. That sounds like the dream! ***Make sure you read all the way down to the end to see a fun contest Anja has in store for us!!*** =========================== As for me, besides being a Polly, I am also part of Anja's Creative Team, and I love making pages with all of her goodies. I'm lucky enough to be on Anja's team and I love the vintage, ethereal and fantasy stuff which can be used in so many different ways!
I made this page with the new Moonlit Hush collection for the journaling challenge, the prompt cards worked perfectly for the word I choose to include in my page.
While I am a Polly and also on Anja's Creative team, I am still going to answer her questions Which of my collections or kits have you used (or are most drawn to), and why? I love all of Anja's kits that I have in my stash. I love them all for various reasons, but the vintage feel to them and the textures make it easy for me to scrap with. I love the new one released today Moonlit Hush for it's lightness and airy feel! What do you think is the most recognizable feature of my style? (e.g., textures, colors, themes, atmosphere…) Texture and color for sure. The painterly aspect and vintage style really speaks to me! My collections often revolve around a theme. What new theme would you love to see from me? I don't know if coffee is a theme, but I love coffee collections! Lots of creme and shades of browns If you could describe my designs in just three words, what would they be? Textured, Airy, Painterly Which of my past collections do you think deserves a ‘sequel’ or an expanded version? One of my favorites is the Irish one "Lucky Charms and Clovers" I love this collection and anything more to it makes me smile! The page I made with the Moonlit Hush collection!
I am on Anja's Team - Thus don't put me in the running for a prize. Which of my collections or kits have you used (or are most drawn to), and why? I am blessed to be on Anja's CT. If were not, I would most likely have bought the following kits anyway because I adore whimsical, magical themes, nature themes, and books and libraries. What do you think is the most recognizable feature of my style? For me, it's the graphics (like fairies and mythical creatures) and flowers...especially the flowers. And, I've been enjoying your prompt cards. My collections often revolve around a theme. What new theme would you love to see from me. I think Anja could work wonders with the Elementals - the spirits of Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. If you could describe my designs in just three words, what would they be? Imaginative, whimsical, mixed-media Which of my past collections do you think deserves a ‘sequel’ or an expanded version? Well, as a nature, forest, and magic lover, I can see Sylvanescence being done for every season of the year...frost fairies and snow-filled forests for winter as an example....or perhaps, a focus on different types of forests from pines to redwoods, to the Amazon Rainforest, the Congo Basin, to Mangrove forests, Hawaii... Here are my two most recent layouts using Anja's Moonlit Hush
@cfile thank you so much for hosting me today ♥ and how awesome that you are answering the questions anyway!
@ArmyGrl I am so lucky to still have you on my team, even though you have your own beautiful brand now, thank you for all the amazing layouts you have made for me so far and thank you so much for answering these questions too
@*sylvia* You have the ability to create layouts with a very clean style and a carefully chosen selection of elements, yet your pages always speak to me, thank you for being on my team!
Which of my collections or kits have you used (or are most drawn to), and why? I'm a kit dipper, so if I'm just scrapping without any requirements, I will most certainly find something from one of your kits to use, but recently when I saw the Roaring 20s themed kit, Have a Roaring New Year, I knew it was just what I needed to scrap photos from a Roaring 20s Murder Mystery party I went to last year. It was perfectly thought out with the art nouveau jeweled word art pieces, the elegant Gatsby Girls, the architectural style brushes in those quintessential 20s era shapes and faded jewel tone colors. LOVE IT! What do you think is the most recognizable feature of my style? (e.g., textures, colors, themes, atmosphere…) I mean, it's in the name of your brand: WHIMSICAL -- there's realism, but it's still full of whimsy, soft and muted, but accurate; full of jumping off points for storytelling; delightful, artistic. Your style is so professional, too. This is not your grandmother's scrapbooking kit from the early 2000s! My collections often revolve around a theme. What new theme would you love to see from me? That might be hard for me to answer, because I can't say that I know all the themes you've explored. I know you live in Europe, but what if you did something that explored the various regions of the United States and some of the legends and myths and history of the various parts of this vast land? I immediately think of the native people and their art in the Pacific Northwest or the Southwest. We've got deserts, oceans, mountains, plains, farmland, bayous, cities, islands, frozen tundra. We've got Sasquatch, jackelope, chupacabra and other mythical creatures. If you could describe my designs in just three words, what would they be? A whimsical adventure! Which of my past collections do you think deserves a ‘sequel’ or an expanded version? Tropical Getaway, with a more orange and blue focus Here's my page for today. Love this little lamb so much!
Thank you so much for being on my team for so long already Géraldine!! I love this adorable heritage page, great blending and vintage vibe! The photo, is it one of your ancestors?
Happy LOD! Which of my collections or kits have you used (or are most drawn to), and why? I favourite I have currently is Mermaid Lagoon. I love beach themed kits, especially shells and sea stars! The colours are amazing! Those blues! Swoon! What do you think is the most recognizable feature of my style? (e.g., textures, colors, themes, atmosphere…) The details and depth of each paper and element! Everything is so beautiful! My collections often revolve around a theme. What new theme would you love to see from me? For me right now, I would say travelling (especially Japan - have a trip to scrap). But anything travel related - I have lots, but always want more! If you could describe my designs in just three words, what would they be? Whimsical, dreamy, curious. Which of my past collections do you think deserves a ‘sequel’ or an expanded version? Mermaid Lagoon, I would love to see more sea creatures, shells, more papers in sunny colours. Here is a page I made with Mermaid Lagoon! Thanks for the chance to win!
I'm incredibly lucky and happy to be on Anja's team! She's a wonderful person, she creates magical things, and her products are unbelievably inspiring! I never considered myself a very girly girl, but because of her, I now love princesses and fairies. I also never thought of myself as a big sci-fi and fantasy fan, but thanks to her, I adore dragons now and *drumroll* I even decided to watch The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, which I had completely missed out on until now! 1. Which of my collections or kits have you used (or are most drawn to), and why? It’s hard to choose, but my absolute favorites might be Sometimes The Frog Is A Prince and The Butterfly Effect. I’m hopeless—I adore flowers and butterflies. And as I mentioned, now I love princesses too! In fact, maybe I even feel like one myself—at least while I’m creating with Anja's kits! 2. What do you think is the most recognizable feature of my style? (e.g., textures, colors, themes, atmosphere…) Whenever I come across anything vintage or fantasy-themed in real life, I instantly think of Anja and her kits. So, I’d definitely say the theme and the atmosphere! Also, it is the way you blend vintage aesthetics with a whimsical, dreamy atmosphere. Your designs always have a sense of mystery and enchantment, making them instantly recognizable. 3. My collections often revolve around a theme. What new theme would you love to see from me? You've already covered almost every theme, but the ones I'd still love to see more collections about are maybe fairies, and outside the fantasy world I'd say Vintage Travel, Old Books & Letters, Everyday Magic, Seasons & Nature and Architecture (you already covered some of these as well). 4. If you could describe my designs in just three words, what would they be? Vintage, whimsical, dreamy. 5. Which of my past collections do you think deserves a ‘sequel’ or an expanded version? More princesses? More flowers and butterflies? I told you—I’m hopeless… And here's one of my layouts I created with Anja's gorgeous new kit:
Oh I LOVE reading all your answers, you are really bringing me to ideas! @jagruti patel yes I don't have any travel themed kits... well I do but it's a very old one and it's not here... I love that page you made with Mermaid Lagoon (yes, I would consider this also as one of my own favorite collections). And @Angela Toucan that page is so beautiful!! @Dorci I am still so happy that you are in my team, the layouts you make are a fairytale in themselves... you have a very unique way of working with my designs!
