Yippee! The votes are in and we have a new batch of books to read together. :circles

The book for July 2025 is Pride and Prejudice By Jane Austen. Feel free to read our book club books in any order that you choose and when you've finished reading, come back here and tell us what you think. Please label spoilers. We have a new trick for hiding spoilers. Type whatever you want and then highlight the spoiler portion and click the + button above and select Spoiler. If that doesn't work (seems to be funky on Macs) just highlight your text and change the color to white >>>This is a super secret spoiler alert!<<< like I did right there.

I finished this the day before yesterday. It was such a nice "reunion". I read it like 30 years ago when I was studying literary science at the university. Loved it then, and love it still! Jane Austen has such a lovely witty sense of humor. I've always thought it feels way more modern than it is.

I'm not sure we really need to use spoilers for this book - is there a person alive who haven't read it, watched the wonderful BBC TV show - or that horrible 2005 movie? But ... just in case...
My favorite in the book is Mrs Bennet - what an irritating person! She's the poster child for a narcissistic mother. Living through her daughters, saying one thing - changing her mind immediately if needed, and so on. But she sure give you a few giggles on the way. Especially when she and Mr Bennet are talking.

There are a lot of talk about who is Pride and who is Prejudice. Most I've seen it's Mr Darcy that's proud and Lizzy is prejudice. But I say - they both have both traits. The society they are living in is full of prejudice and pride. Don't aim higher than your own social status, and even worse - don't aim down! There are tons of silly rules to abide.

I looked up the Regency Era a bit. Who knew it was just a short period of just NINE years!?? I've read so many regency romances in my life - I imagined it was a way longer period of time. Here's a little video I found on YouTube, but NOTE that there are SPOILERS in this video! In case you don't know the story already, DO NOT watch this video before you've read the book.

Also, have you read any of all the spin-off novels?
Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James
Pride, Prejudice & Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
    Longbourn by Jo Baker
The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow
Just to mention a few - there are many more. I've only read the zombie one - it basically follow the same story, but there are zombies everywhere. Death Comes to Pemberley is a sort of sequel to P&P. Longbourn is P&P told from the servants' perspective, and The Other Bennet Sister is Mary's story.
