I am curious what the consensus was on "girly" elements and colors on a boy page. In general I never cared. Almost every single page of mine will have a flower on it. I have been working on a page with pictures of Jasper from the day he was born and the kit I was drawn to was pretty girly...lol and now I am second guessing my choice. Hubby thinks it is too girly. :/ What do you guys think about using pink (or even hot pink lol) on a newborn boy page. No biggie? Would you automatically think it was a girl page if you saw it without reading or knowing? Am I overthinking it (totally possible lol).
I love flowers... and will make most kits work for me... even if there is pink them. (I have two boys) I do, however, choose to use the other colors in the kit, or try recoloring, if no other color flower/element is available for pink. I use flowers on most of my layouts, and when the boys see the pages... they pet them, and don't even mention color, lol! I used a Hello Kitty kit for a boy page once. lol! As for newborn... honestly, I'd have to see the kit, and possibly the photo. What about a mixed kit that offers white flowers to keep the pink/girly feel at bay... I don't know why a newborn page is different... maybe since all newborns look alike. Either way... I say go with what you like! You're creating it!
K! I will show the pics (I cropped them from the page) I am using a couple new releases so don't think I can post it yet or I would just post the whole thing to see what everyone thought. lol! I actually really love it, but worry it looks like I am scrapping baby girl pics.. Pics of Jasper the day he was born (Doesn't help that the hospital hat is pink and blue haha) Using All the Feels by Amber:
Ooohh... so adorable! We had similar hats too! I think they are required, lol! I love All The Feels! You could easily offset the pink with the black/blue and mustard. You could totally use that, though I would find some big white flowers or mustard color flowers, as opposed to pink, I think. Sara's Sanguine would be a great mix, too! (https://the-lilypad.com/Sanguine-elements-by-Sara-Gleason.html) and Liz's Joie de Vivre (https://the-lilypad.com/joie-de-vivre-elements.html)... that might give you more choices.
I have 2 boys & no girs. My boys both like the color pink & I don't think twice about using it on my pages. The one thing that does bug me though, there are no dance class/recital kits for boys. My 7yr old has danced tap & ballet since he was 2. I buy the dance kits & barely use the elements because they mostly say ballerina, tutu, and princess.
Off Topic, but you are lucky! I have had a neigh impossible time finding a dance class for my son. The only ballet classes available were the professional ballet studio, and girls classes. Blah! I need to go look again.
I started him at the studio where I danced as a kid. They kept saying "be princesses", so I left. For the last 4 years, we've been driving an hour each way to a performing arts studio. I have a friend teaching closer, so I think we'll be going there. She'll be teaching musical theater too, which is so awesome! Check out my gallery, you'll see Brody the dancer.
oh @jesskab now that I think about it...most dance kits are girly! Maybe someone will see this and be inspired to make a dance kit in gender neutral colors and have some word art to include boys?! For anyone curious this was my page: As I was doing it, it just looked pretty girly so I nixed the Jasper by himself pics and told the story of when Stella first met her baby brother. Usually I don't care and put all kinds of flowers on boy pages but for some reason this one was not feeling right as solely a boy page and hubby kept commenting on it when he went by :/ boys are lame
@crystalbella77 I don't see this as girly at all! I put an announcement out to the designers on facebook every year. Someday, it will happen.
I have all boys and I will definitely use "girly" colors and elements on their pages. To me (and my boys), they're just colors and they're just elements. Frankly, I'm tired of seeing so-called boy kits always having the same color scheme of blue, green and orange, full of stars and gears and not much else. I say use all the colors and use all the flowers lol
reminds me of the time my son got his first real haircut ... we could walk into our little town and i had both babes in our double stroller. they gave him his choice of balloon when he finished and he picked the pink one. that lady tried her mightiest to get him to pick a blue or green balloon. and i was like "why? please, just let him have the pink balloon!" he was TWO for goodness sake! and ... we paraded through town with him proudly holding his beautiful pink balloon.
aww! I think it is so bizarre that pink is only for girls and flowers are only for girls. :/ My kids love all the colors and when they are itty bitty the are with me the most so they want things that I have..like pink purses and things haha! People are so weird about it!
Yes! my son always loved pink and red ... and red is still a fave at 15. he's since let go of the pink obsession. I lived in SF for a short time ... there was a little children's boutique at the time, that would not separate clothing into boy/girl. everything was mixed together - there was no girl's section or boy's section .... inviting parents to embrace "all the colors" for their children - instead of teaching boys to only like/accept certain colors. really it was "training" for parents. hehe. some parents had a very hard time with this concept. it is just so ingrained in people .. well at least here in America. not sure about other countries!
It's totally here too. All the girls trousers have hearts and rhinestones, and all the boys ones have ripped knees, pirates, and soccer balls. It shouldn't be so difficult to just find a pair of jeans. Just... jeans, without junk all over them advertising gender stereotypes! I stopped shopping at a store that refused to take down "boys toys" and "girls toys" signs. Like my girls can't play with dinosaurs?! I don't understand it at all. My mother joked that I must have wanted a boy when I bought a fire truck for Maggie's first birthday. Oooooor I noticed that, like many kids that age, she was really into wheeled toys and I just... bought one?
I read somewhere long ago that pink used to be for boys and blue for girls. It's just a cultural concept that changes over time.
