how dependent on the internet we have become? At least I have. Mine was out ALL DAY yesterday (8:15 am to 5:30 pm). I couldn't watch TV, listen to music. I had to run over to my daughters to take a zoom call. So many times, I just wanted to look something up quickly and I couldn't. Even trying to use my phone -- my cell signal at my house isn't great, so it is super slow to try and do anything without being on wifi. So glad it is back on today.
I HATE it when we lose internet ... at home or at the office. Thankfully it doesn't happen very often as my cell signal at home isn't great either.
Think about this a lot. Remember when you could sit for hours, trying to remember IE who sung that song or trying to figure out a word in a lyric? Or whatever really. Now all you need is Google. And on a more serious level. About a year ago, one of the big food chains in Sweden got hackad (for ransom). All stores had to close because of no computers meant no way of knowing the prices, no way to charge for the food ... stores just wasn't able to do anything for days. We've created a very vunerable society. Especially here in Sweden, we are quickly evolving into a cash free society. Scary!
so, true. Just the other day I went to Target to return something and just whipped out my phone to scan the barcode for the receipt and to accept the return. I remember commenting that I almost don't need to carry my wallet anymore, just for my driver's license.
Yep! It's a little scary. We are trying to have a less internet day once a week to enhance our creativity and such. And as an electronic break. But we still end up using the internet a bit.
So dependent in our house and at my job. If it goes out, I usually read a book since I have a few downloaded. I think I'd turn to board games, card games without it. Even more so for my husband, he works for Verizon - a hefty part of his job is installation, and troubleshooting. Different kind of dependency, lol!
Even though I have the same provider for internet and cable, I've never had a problem losing both of them at the same time (well, unless electric is off). That is until Monday morning. My cable was acting up so I figured I'd watch the news program through the internet using watchtvanywhere that my provider has available to us. No response on the website then I noticed my internet was disconnected. I looked at my router and it was flashing trying to connect. So I figured I'd take a shower and see if either had come back afterwards. 30 minutes later I still had neither so I called the provider (thank goodness for a local service). At that time they said I was the only report and they saw that I had no service. They would call me and let me know if it was something that could be fixed in their equipment or if they would need to come out. Awhile later I got a phone call that they had more reports of no service in my area so they knew it was on the lines and were going out to check it out and they had no ETA for when it would be fixed. So I did some work on the computer that I didn't need internet for and then my Echo flashed to show the weather (it had been stuck on the clock) so I turned on the tv (yea it was back!) and then saw my internet connection was back! About 2 hours from the time it went out until it came back. Later on I got another phone call from the provider that said the local electric company was doing some work and accidentally got the cable/internet lines causing the outage. Evidently the local electric company was doing some work and had notified residents involved in the area of a short power outage. I must not have been in that group since my power never went out. I survived but had the power been out as well... that's another story. That's when I get panicked especially in colder weather since I have electric heat!
It makes me super grumpy. With load shedding we lose electricity so I have to switch to using data but at least I still have connection.
I came close, but didn't really have any I wanted to start. I did come close to unpacking my DVD player and some DVDs, but again nothing really I wanted to watch.
I have natural gas heat, but if the electric goes off there goes my igniter and fan ... so no heat. Losing electric in the winter is so much harder than in the summer.
Well, one good thing... We only have cable for the internet. Our phone is billed through a different carrier. And we only have a very large roof antenna for our TV. But I hear you about the internet. I have my tablet with me almost constantly to look up things, to watch youtube videos, listen to podcasts, etc. etc.
I have no antenna. I tried an indoor one, but can't get any broadcast channels where I cam. I don't pay for cable, so everything I watch is through the internet.
Yes... reception... With digital, it is either a strong signal, or nothing at all. On good days, we can pick up Madison, WI (about 60 miles to the north of us). On a bad day, we don't get much in the way of shows.
Our server went down at my office on Monday morning (I work at a very busy eye clinic) and we were totally lost. Can't view charts, can't take payments, no phones. We were a hot mess! Luckily it came back on pretty quick.
Oh my gosh yes! I wander around without purpose when the internet or electricity goes out. It is a little scary how dependent we are on it for all the things!
If our internet goes out in the evening, we just go to bed. I don't like it but if the service goes out during the day, at least I can get out hiking with the dogs, read a book, do some chores. My hubs is lost b/c he spends a lot of time watching tv.
