January 6: Dispersion (Technique Challenge)

Wow - what a cool technique!!

 

After a nap, I tackled the challenge again. I was looking through a kit and found a facemask that had the technique applied to it! I decided to try it on an element from the kit Mansion Masquerade. Finally, I had something that I could go with! I used Steampunk Wonderland for my background and most of the elements (the "blushing bride" wearing the "dispersed" mask is from Day of the Dead). I just HAD to try the technique on the falling "Alice," too. Here is my effort:

My Program That I Use To Scrapbook Is "Creating Keepsakes Scrapbook Designer Platinum" By Broderbund

 

I struggled a bit with this, mainly because I was expecting something different with the splatter. I think if I used different brushes I might have gotten a different effect, so I will try this again at some other point. I definitely think it takes a very specific photo to really make this work. Fun challenge Jan - I love learning new things!!

I decided to try something a little different and use a landscape photo for the effect.

 

I had never done anything like this before, it's pretty fun.

 

Like many others, I was stressed (challenged) with this technique, but that is the point of MOC - to try things out of your comfort zone. I could play for hours with this technique to get it "right." Definitely need to try a variety of brushes to get different effects. For now, I will go with this one - my favorite of three that I tried. I think it works well with this kit from @dawninskip. I went with a more artsy style and used a lot of blending and masking.

 

What a great technique challenge ! I can't participate to the all MOC this year, but I had to do this one :

 

This was kind of fun - once I got my head wrapped around the concepts! It took For.Ev.Er to get something I was happy with, tho. I definitely need to explore my brushes and try this again. Probably not for awhile, tho. LOL!

 

well i got a little further but stuck now at brush part. i understand layer masks so that is not an issue. its the brushes. i used default pse scatter brush and it looks awful nothing like examples ive seen. is there a trick to using the brushes.

any suggestion on a FREE brush to use.

 

i too am struggling. i am not sure what is the difference with doing this vs just putting splatter paint on your photo? i have tried the technique and i just dont see why it would be used on the photos i have maybe it works best on certain photos, like the model that they show in the video . can someone say what kind of photo is the best. close up ones? i just dont get why i would do this to a photo. sorry to sound so "debbie downer" really want to try this and i must say the first steps did teach me some great tools to extract with but i cant understand what i am doing once i do the masks...i only get black or white splatter. is that right?

 

I knew I would struggle so used a really high contrast photo with a clear background. I did extract the balloon from the background and cloned in the sky but in the end I used a patterned paper (and a gradient layer) for the background on this art journal style page.



This is just the balloon with the technique (I also played with artistic filters on the balloon) - my main struggle was getting the top layer of the balloon to look blended with the liquified layer. Typing this I now realise I should also have done a layer mask for the edge of that too, oh well.
