I need to cry my EHD is seriously playing up and as i have had to buy the boys football boots this weekend and take the dogs to the vets i havent the money till a week on wednesday for another but im scared of losing everything before then

It keeps connectiing, disconnecting and reconnecting itself and an error saying i need to reformat it.
Could i back it up to online back up then format it and grab the stuff back from online onto it ?

Any help would be appreciated thanks

I think your hard disk is in danger of dying at any time. Do you have existing backups? If not, I would suggest you back up immediately. To your online backup and also to your local C and any other hard disks you might have. If you don't have enough space on them, then start backing up as much as you can of the stuff most crucial to you - documents, photos, layouts. For me, I wouldn't continue to use the disk, except as a 3rd backup perhaps.

When you get your new disk, consider getting another one as a backup and keep it synced. That way, if the disk fails, you can just plug over to the backup and keep working like nothing's happened. I've already had at least 3 disk crashes so I feel your panic :) Good luck!

Yes, save it somewhere asap! This happened to me before. It's awful. In fact, this reminds me that I need to do another backup SOON! Hope you are able to save all of your stuff!

If you just started the process, you can still cancel and start over. My 1Tb took me almost a whole day when I did it in one go. It'll be loads faster to multi-task and do multiple copy jobs at the same time.

Prioritize it all and then start moving in medium size chunks. Not too big, not too small. Like someone else said I wouldn't use that drive unless it's like a "scratch disk" or a "third backup". The reason most HD die is due to all the moving pieces it has, so those are things that once they are bad they will continue to be bad. Get a second HD (if budget allows) now in Black Friday, they are put for a good price.

I second the recommendations : don't try to back up too much at once, do it bit by bits starting with the most crucial ones.

I would also recommend considering an online backup service such a crashplan... we recently had a leak in the roof and the water poured right onto my desk, flooding my laptop and my backup drive. I feared I'd have to buy another laptop and EHD but didn't fear too much for my data knowing that crashplan would allow me to restore everything.

Keeping my fingers crossed for your data... hope you'll be able to backup everything before the hard drive dies.

you could try burning small groups of folders onto cd's if your computer hard drive cant hold it all. never a bad idea to have cd back ups just incase!
