Just in time for Mother's Day, Save the Children did their annual report on the best countries in the world to be a mother. They based their rankings on health, education and economic conditions for women and children in 165 countries.

    Link

Norway tops the list at #1. The top ten is mostly European countries. The US is 25th out of 43 developed countries.

Apparently the US really drops the ball with early childhood education and the political status of women. No shockers there.

Anyway, I thought this was interesting.

Oh, that frustrates me that I can't find the full list - am I blind? does anyone else see it? I wonder if they take into account the way mother's (and children) are treated by society as well as the health care and education stuff. I'd love to know where Germany is. I'm not surprised to see it missing from the top ten though!

It's in the download section of the site. Here is the ranking of developed countries:

It looks like Germany is 12th.

wow this is pretty interesting and could say (although our politicians truly suck) I'm somewhat proud of our little country...The netherlands for sharing a 10th place with the UK :D

what i absolutely love about the norwegian government is that they really want you to have children and want you to be able to stay at home with them for 1-3 years. you get 100% of your yearly salary the first year at home! if you need it you also get economical help for daycare + every single mother get a monthly amount (around $170) from the baby is born and until (s)he's 18.
