Neither. My parents drank tea. At our office we serve instant coffee to clients b/c none of us drink coffee.
The flavor of coffee beans varies greatly depending on the type of bean, where they were grown, and how they are roasted, so it's probably not that an artificial flavor was added. I had a brief overview as part of my work training. We also are supposed to do coffee tastings where we identify the different undertones, etc. Since I don't like coffee, I haven't been able to force myself to try enough to get the hang of it. We had a customer come in the other day who wanted to order a coffee we were about to dump since it had passed the time limit. We let him try it to see if he still wanted it even though it was "old" (still pretty fresh by most people's standards), and he loved it, exclaiming how he could really taste the spruce. I wouldn't think spruce would be something that would taste good, but whatever floats your boat!
If my coffee maker hadn’t decided to break this morning, hiss, moan, kicking the dirt, I would use ground flavored coffee. It just would not turn on and it is about 7 months old. This is not a good start for 2023.
Friends of ours did that same thing, but now we have a roaster that you can set the time for regular coffee like us and expresso (for our daughter). My DH is now researching the best coffee beans based on the country they come from (yes we do have our fav countries and beans) to use for expresso! It is a science!
We found a coffee bean vendor who sells "green coffee beans" and we like Sumatra (which is a smooth blend and most commonly found in office coffee servers) but there are some great coffees from Costa Rica and Brazil (the "bean" belt") but we also enjoy Ethiopia where the beans are often sweet, fruity and floral tasting. Costa Rican coffee beans are very aromatic. It really is a science!
I think I discovered at one point that I like Arabica beans. It's amazing how different all the different coffees can taste
