I feel like I need to be the resident Cooking Pad Polly, I keep posting recipe and cooking related posts Does anyone have a pressure cooker and do you use it? My mom got all of us kids one for Christmas this last year and I totally love it. I used it on Saturday night to make a great chicken and Rice dish and tonight to make a Turkey and Rice stuffed bell peppers. Anyone have some great recipes to link me up to?
I have one... and I have no clue what to do. LOL! It looks like a contraption to me. I like to cook too, but it's intimidating! Do you have easy recipes or websites you started with? Not that this helped your original question though... lol! Sorry!
I'm still intimidated by mine. I keep saying I'm going to pull it out and master it one of these days.
Never used one and don't have the slightest idea what to do with one. On the other hand I love my slow cooker/crockpot.
I don't have one, but my Mom used to cook with one and I think she used her for canning too? Anyway, I'm with Angie, I was always scared of that thing when my Mom would fire it up. LOL! On the other hand, I do love the concept of a self contained contraption that'll make a meal for me...
Growing up we always have had several pressure cookers. Huge ones for canning, and several in other smaller sizes. I really love using the pressure cooker to cook things fast. We call it our pea cooker here bc we use it to cook peas in about 20 minutes, vs cooking them for several hours. I should broaden my pressure cooking ability beyond garden veggies and try to look up other recipes. The chicken/rice recipe would go over well with our crew.
Um... peas take several hours to cook? how come? I pull mine outta the freezer and nuke them for 8 minutes. Whatcha doin' with peas to need to cook them that long? p.s. I am NOT a cook. I'm genuinely curious...
I should have clarified. I'm not talking english peas, but purple hull peas. They are firm and need to simmer a while, but cook in minutes in the pressure cooker. http://simpledailyrecipes.com/849/homecooked-purple-hull-peas/ This also reminds me that my grandmother always cooked whole chickens in the pressure cooker when she was making chicken and dumplings. I really dislike de-boning hot chicken, but Mmmmmmmmmm the dumplings are amazing!!
My mom has one and uses it quite a bit. She thought I should have one too and bought me one about twenty years ago. That sucker scares me! ( I'm not convinced mine works correctly though ) I think my DH has used it a couple of times. I try to avoid cooking as much as possible so I just pretend it's not available.
do you guys mean a slow cooker? I got one for Christmas and love it, but I seriously need recipes for it. With school and kids activities coming up again soon, it would be nice to prepare the night before, turn it on in the morning and have supper ready when the kids get home
Andrea, we live out of the crockpot during winter. I have 3 different sizes-small one for dips, medium for meals (there's just 2 of us) and my big 6 qt for making soup. I will cut up potatoes and carrots then put a nice pot roast on top. Add a little water, Worcestshire sauce, some rosemary, salt and pepper turn on low and dinner is ready 8-10 hours later.
I feel like I should own one and use one since all the chefs on all the cooking shows use them... but I don't.
LeeAndra - I was just going to say that. Every time they mentioned using the pressure cooker on the shows I think about using mine. Maybe when my holiday is over in a few weeks and we go home I should get mine out and try it (if it works b/c it's been sitting in a drawer for yrs).
Ha, you guys are cracking me up!! Pressure cookers and slow cookers/crockpots are two different beasts. Slowcookers/Crockpots cook things slowly over several hours usually : Pressure cookers cook things under high pressure and cook things very quickly! They usually have a little deal-y on top that regulates the pressure and it rattles so that you know that it is cooking your food. You do have to read the instruction manual and I started with just using some of the recipes from the manual, but have checked out a couple of books from the library with recipes as well. I have pinned a few recipes on pinterest here, but haven't tried any of those yet. I made turkey and rice stuffed peppers last night and it was super easy and it cooked in 12 minutes once it reached pressure, maybe a total of 15-20 min on the stove. On Saturday, I made a chicken and rice dish that cooked in 15 minutes. My favorite way to make potatoes is to cut potatoes in large chunks, add about 1 cup of water, bring it to pressure, it cooks in like 5 minutes (I follow the chart in my manual), release the pressure, drain, add a bit of butter and milk, salt and pepper and stir them around and they are SO good. And mine is only 4 quarts, so it is a smaller one. I wouldn't mind having a bigger one though. ETA: I have made this recipe and it was SO good even though it sounded weird.
Hmmmm, I may have to look into one of those. Would only need a small one though. Can you put the meat in frozen? That's one if things I love about my slow cooker, because I usually forget to take it out beforehand, lol.
