How do you keep track of what photos you have scrapped??

Short answer: I don't. LOL

I scrap what I feel like, so there are times I've scrapped a picture more than once, and times where I've tried and just can't scrap a photo.

 

I don't have any good ways to keep track either, so I'll be watching this thread for ideas!

 

I am with Susie, I scrap what I feel like, even if that means I used the same photos more than once.
I have an ongoing project that captures every week on a page, documenting the little stories and events, then another album for bigger events like birthdays and anniversaries. There's definite duplication there, but as they will be in different books, I don't mind.

 

Don't know if it's a good way but as I name my scrap page files with the date of the event first so, if I forgot if I scrapped or not I just go to my scrap folder for that year/month etc.. And vice versa. At some point I'd like to print my pages so I'd like to have them in chronological order, that's why I name them with date first and then title or person.

 

Couldn't have said it better myself. I figure if a photo tells the story I want to tell whether I've used it or not isn't a major issue so I'll reuse it on a new layout.

 

I am in agreement with a few here .. I also don't .. my photos on my EHD are by mos/yr but in general I scrap based on theme, story etc and what I feel at the time. I keep my finished pages scrapped by year on my EHD and look at them that way.

 

I hope you find encouragement here from all of us who don't keep track of what photos we have scrapped. I too just scrap whichever ones I feel like at the time. Generally it's from the last few weeks, so when I'm scrapping regularly, I get a little bit of every month, and occasionally I grab photos from months or even many years ago. When I print, I just let them "fall" into my album in the order in which I scrapped them -- their filenames are the date I made the page -- and so if it's a page from the current year it's sort of in chronological order, with the pages of old photos interspersed. And it's cool with me. We don't think chronologically when we're reminiscing, so why should we scrap chronologically? ❤️

 

Like Michele, I'm not a chronological scrapper. I do reuse photos, although I try not to. When I save my layout, I use keywords that I can search on, and that gives me a visual of what has been used so I can pick another photo if necessary.

I believe @gonewiththewind uses Lightroom (which I don't have, still limping along with CS5) where she color codes the photos she uses.

 

I don't keep track. I do try not to rescrap photos.... unless I really like it of me, hahaha - those are hard to come by! I do sort my albums by date after I make a slew of pages... I save my layouts with the month and year in the names if possible. I'm more of a lets have fun scrapping and remembering... than the I need to fill my albums with specific times dates person.

Ok... I'm apparently the only crazy person here who MUST keep track of everything. I do two things to keep track of what I've scrapped, I name every page with YEAR-MONTH-DAY_Event Name (2023-12-25 Christmas Day) so when they are all in a folder together they can be listed in chronological order. I don't scrap in order at all, but at least I can see all the pages in order once they are done. The other thing I do is keep a list of what I want to scrap in an Excel spreadsheet. When I download pictures, or later when I'm looking through them, I just keep adding to my "To Scrap" list in order with a date. That way, when I want to scrap, I look at my list and pick what I want to scrap next. Then I mark a page "done" in another column so I can see what is done and what still needs to be done.

If you're on your iPad you could even create a Google Sheets document so you can access it from both your iPad or your computer or even your phone.

 

I'm a pocket, project-life-style scrapper but I jump all over the place on past years so I actually keep a printout of annual calendars and cross off when I finish a week.

 

Yes, I still use Lightroom and use colors to help me determine what has been scrapped. I also use a spreadsheet for every year that includes the date, event description, and a thumbnail of my layout.

I use Lightroom, and mark my photos that I've already scrapped with the color purple. That way, at a quick glance I know what has already been scrapped. Before I used Lightroom, I had started changing the name of the photo file by adding SCRAPPED at the end. Like 2018-01-02_SCRAPPED.jpg.



Additionally, I also keep an Excel file with the dates I took photos, what transpired that day, and then tuck in a thumbnail of the completed layout. When I'm done with a particular day, then I fill that row with a medium gray so I know that event is scrapped. This is SUPPOSED to help me when it comes to printing and/or finding particular layouts. I find it quite satisfying to see the rows of completed layouts. LOL

 

I'm a spreadsheet person and also a paper list person lol! When I'm in the mood to be productive but don't feel like scrapping, I go through old photos and add them to a google sheet. I have one for each year with a tab for each month. I have a column for adding when the layout was complete and then grey out the line so I can easily see what's left...



I do this for two kind of opposite reasons... 1) to make sure I get all photos scrapped and 2) to be able to quickly find photos to fit new kits I want to use. So one is from a photo perspective and the other is from a scrapping perspective. This method allows me to jump around and scrap whatever I feel motivated to scrap at the moment. It also lets me see what's left and whether or not it might just make sense to do a wrap up page with the miscellaneous photos from that month so I can call it done.

I also do this for trips... especially when I have photos from multiple sources...


I list where the specific photos can be found in my files so I don't miss them.

Current smaller projects, like Document Your December, I tend to do written lists and have a dedicated notebook for keeping track of our activities and photos.

 

I wish I was as organized as you are. This actually looks pretty cool - I know I won't do it, so I'll drool on yours!

Be reassured! You are not!! lol I do the same. It's the Japan dating order style and I love it! I use it for my photos folders too and any other document folders for work sometimes too. It just makes sense to me and it's easy to sort yes.
I do not scrap in order either. I pick photos depending on the colors of the products I need/want to work with. But when I want to find something I can just check my scrap folders and check if I laready have scrapped that photo. I try not to scrap same photos over and over. At the end of the day it's about the memory and I don't need 3 or 4 pages with that same one shot.

I don't make a file for "to scrap photos" but we would get along so well! You need to have a look at my credits for scrap pages Excel file I'm a digi freak and I'm not ashamed of it!!

 

It depends on the project.

Regular photos? I mark them purple in Lightroom after scrapping them. Cheryl taught me that. Prior to that, I would add a tag "not scrapped" and then remove the tag when I scrapped. That was due to an older program that didn't let me exclude keywords, just include them.

Trips: I go through and export all the photos I want to scrap into a separate folder. Then, I add a folder inside called "done". As I use the photos, I move them over. This way I can also delete a photo that I change my mind about or is basically a duplicate without touching my real photo library.

I didn't use to mark them, so I'm catching up still in my oldest photo folders. I don't mind rescrapping a photo in general, but I like to have more photos scrapped, so I try to aim for that.

 

I sort of do Cheryl's way. When I started with Lightroom I didn't include my old (scanned) photos, only those that were current digital. Although I'm bad about opening Lightroom and marking photos. I also set up a spreadsheet like Cheryl's to put the layouts when done. Again I don't add to it when I scrap them but every couple of months I will go through and add the layouts.

I have another spreadsheet (yep, I'm a spreadsheet junkie) that I plan out my albums I'm doing since I scrap by theme. I scrap layouts for my cousin's family and make Shutterfly books for them so this helps me keep track of how many layouts I have to know when to order a book. As they put photos on FB, I list the event with the date so I can keep them in chronological order. I've also planned some of my albums this way, especially those using older scanned photos.
