My handy-dandy calendar tells me that today is Johnny Appleseed Day! If you don't know, Johnny Appleseed aka John Chapman is an American pioneer that was responsible for introducing apple trees to parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania and is better known for his nickname Johnny Appleseed than he is for his real name. I know we talked about candied vs caramel apples the other day, but I'm curious if you have a favorite variety of apple? Do you like them sweet or more tart? I'm a tart apple lover myself and Granny Smith are my favorite! I also like my apples really crisp!
I like Red Delicious apples, they are medium sweet. I used to like green apples with salt sprinkled on them when I was a kid.
When I ate apples, it was Red Delicious. I hear the name Johnny Appleseed a lot since there is a metro park district by that name just 10 miles from my town. There are 14 parks in the district located in several counties in the area.
My favourite Apple variety is the Yello (also know as the Shinano Gold) that I get from the farmers markets. Its delicious and juicy and sweet. Its nearly out of peak growing season and I will be soooooo sad when its gone but love the seasonal nature of the farmers markets although, that being said, my acupuncturist has forbidden me from eating any fruit but pears at the moment so I can't eat them anyway
I'm not particular about apples . . . and prefer several other fruits over apples. But I've been making this apple crisp a lot over the last couple years.
Honey Crisp when they are in season, otherwise Gala. I like Granny Smith for caramel apples or when I’m dipping apple slices in caramel. Red Delicious are good, but when cut they turn brown too quickly. Anyone eat Waldorf Salad? Apples, grapes, marshmallows, raisins, celery in mayo or Miracle Whip? Some recipes don’t include the raisins, but have walnuts instead.
Pink Lady gets my vote, although Fuji and Golden Delicious are great too. When I saw the title of the thread I remembered singing Johnny Appleseed in Girl Guides, it was said to bring the rain...
I like sweeter apples. We have TONS of apple farms around us that do U-pick in the fall. I used to love taking the kids to do that. I love honeycrisp, pink lady, gala and golden delicious (looks like the one Amanda posted above)
My fave is Honey Crisp, with a close second going to Pink Lady. I used to love Granny Smith, but I prefer a less tangy apple as an adult. The Honey Crisp has the crispness of a Granny Smith, but is oh-so-sweet, like honey.
There's a new apple variety that was released here Cosmic Crisp- it's a honeycrisp variety & SO yummy! Meet Your New Favorite Apple The Cosmic Crisp® brand apple is the remarkable result of 20 years of study and research by Washington State University’s world-class tree fruit breeding program. Classically bred and grown in Washington State, the Cosmic Crisp® is a cross of the Enterprise and Honeycrisp varieties. The large, juicy and red apple has a perfectly balanced flavor and firm texture, making it ideal for snacking, cooking, baking, and entertaining.
Cox, small sweet and you can never find it in the shops. Gala and golden for eating . Granny Smith for cooking... Marshmallow in waldorf salad ? Really ?
Now that you've said that it triggered a memory for me as well. I remember seeing it made the same way and just google waldorf salad with marshmallows... recipes do come up.
The 60s were full of weird recipes ... lots of Jello salads ... mom made one with lemon jello, crushed pineapple and grated carrots. I tried making it a few years ago, but it didn't taste as good as I remember it tasting. Of course, I didn't have her recipe and was just going by memory of what went in it.
