On Monday, July 19, Kay and I went to see Margaret. We had a great visit but Margaret was having trouble making and following conversation. When I tried to move her into a more upright position, I noticed her pants were all wet. So the staff changed her and put her into her bed. They claimed she had spilled water on herself. She seemed rather anxious that day. I don't think she knew who we were. Beth Craig come in right before we left and told us her family was talking of moving her into another care facility.
On Tuesday, August 10, I went to visit Margaret by myself. Kay had planned to go with me but she was unable to go. Margaret was in good spirits. She knew who I was and we talked a lot. When I asked her, she did not remember me bringing dinners to her house. She did tell me she got a lot of visitors but that some of them she did not enjoy. She told me that I could come any time I wanted. She was always glad to see me, or Beth, or Mac. She cried a bit about missing Linwood and not knowing why she was still here on this earth. Near the end of my visit, Richard came in to see her and to remind her she was moving to a new facility the next day. She was much more anxious with Richard there, so I said goodbye to her, knowing as I thought each time, this might be my last visit.
It was. They moved her to the new facility and before I could get over there, she started to rapidly decline. Sylvania was able to come be with her for the last week. Beth was there every day too. I had only found out recently that Beth was Sarah and Rudy Griffin's daughter. Sarah and Rudy were some of Margaret and Linwood's closest friends. Margaret passed away on August 29. She was 98.
Margaret graduated from nursing school and worked a nurse for many years before she and Linwood had children: two girls, Susan and Lynn, and a boy, Richard. They were married 61 years before Linwood passed in 2010. They had 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Margaret loved to garden and was active in a garden club for years. She loved God and served the Lord at Westwood Baptist and then Dayspring for many years. She was the mother and grandmother to many of us. She will be missed but her love for others and her beautiful character will live on in our memories of her. Oh how I desire to be the next “Margaret Tew”.
Her graveside service was on September 4. It was very hot as we gathered around her and Linwood’s gravestone. Mac gave a short sermon. The next day, a memorial service was held at Dayspring for her. Oh the sweet memories of our dear departed friend and sister in the Lord.
