Journaling:
The kids definitely go through phases. There is a span of time where they want to be inside all the time, often in the winter, to play with Lego and K'Nex (neither of which we allow outdoors or the little pieces would go missing), or crafts or painting. During these times, the carpets are littered with tiny pieces of building toys, no matter how many times we get them to clean up. But they build so creatively, and it is neat to see how well they can focus on a task! I end up seeing a lot of Lego in the washing machine, because of all the little pieces they put in their pockets as the day goes on.
Then there are the times when they want to be outside all the time. Right after getting off the bus from school, up until the time they go to bed (with a very short break for supper). It doesn't matter if it is summer or winter. They will find something exciting to do (and they end up using up a lot of energy!) They run around the yard, pretending to be clones battling droids, or knights battling the "bad guys", or else just brothers battling each other. They play on the play center, in the sand, and in the garden! And instead of little Lego pieces all over the house, we end up with little bits of sticks, sand, treasured rocks, or whatever else they deem valuable enough to stuff in their pockets. Which also occasionally ends up in the washing machine!
