- Description:
- Photos of the Michigan Cavalry monument at Gettysburg as well as my 3rd great-grandfather Milo Thompson who fought with the 1st Michigan cavalry. The colors used represent the cavalry. Their uniforms were dark blue jackets trimmed with yellow and lighter blue pants with a yellow stripe down the side.
Journaling Says:
Of all the places on the Gettysburg battlefield there is one place that I have always felt connected to – the East Cavalry Battlefield. I felt a connection to the land there the first time we visited it in 2008. I felt as if I belonged there. The land is so remote and distant from the main part of the battlefield it is easy to be transported back to July 3, 1863. The largest monument there is the Michigan Cavalry brigade monument. It was there on July 3 that the Michigan Cavalry under the command of newly promoted Brigadier General George A. Custer helped to defeat the Confederate cavalry who outnumbered them. It wasn’t until I began researching my family’s history several years later that I found a reason why that location would be so special to me. My 3rd great-grandfather Milo A. Thompson fought in the Civil War with Company G in the 1st Michigan Cavalry. He enlisted in 1861 and fought throughout the war. His unit fought at Gettysburg at the East Cavalry battlefield. It is possible that I stood at the very spot where he fought. I truly believe that the feeling I have for that part of the battlefield comes from my 3rd great-grandfather. There is a connection to my past there among the vast fields. I like to think that Milo fought bravely that day. I will never know what he did exactly at Gettysburg was or how well he fought, but I can feel him there when I stand on the East Cavalry battlefield.
