If you missed the chat, or want to go over it a few more times, HERE IT is: Every program is different. I am on CS5 (and about to take the plunge to CC) . I learned this technique years ago from Misty Cato, and I went to see if she still had the tutorial up. It was all screen shots. I totally freaked that her daughter is now old! Lol, where did that infant go? I am sure there are many ways to achieve this look. Before I had CS5, I would very carefully use the erase tool. A whole lot of CONTROL Z moments. And then I would get all froggy and totally mess it up and have to start all over. Growling at myself. If you don't work with layer masks often, or not all all. I want to teach you a little ditty to help you keep it in your head. Black - Erase White - REplace I can't take credit for that, I learned it from Phlearn (Aaron Nace) on CreaTive LIve. (he also has so many Youtube videos) I recommend binging on his videos. He is funny, knows his stuff and you will laugh and learn . My favorite! So let us begin: Here is a screen shot. The charm is just on the string. 2 layers. the charm is laying ON the string, we want it threaded on the string I duplicate the charm, then LINK those two layers (in case you move one, the other goes with it) I like to put the ORIGINAL under the string and COPY above. YOU can do either. that is just a personal preference and all of it in a nutshell I also have a bonus how to etch fonts into metal Please, please if you have any questions, post them. This is a great and fun way to add more depth to your pages. There is so much to do with a LAYER MASK. and my favorite EXTRACTIONS!! bhahahhhah
one of the questions asked was shadowing. I shadow both layers. The top layer at a lower opacity. I then have the option to right click on the EFFECT and I create a NEW layer with the shadow... I place another mask on the shadow, and erase the parts that need to be gone. I also warp and play?
@AnneofAlamo I use a mask to erase like this and also put shadow on separate layer to warp as needed. It's a very useful technique to know. BTW....your doodled arrows and circles help to show the instructions, good job!
@AnneofAlamo You asked that we post some examples of using a layer mask. Here is one of mine. I used a layer mask on the owl. I removed the parts of the owl that were covering her hands. So now she looks like she is holding the owl.
oh @mcurtt that is a great example of using the mask to place an item into another..great great! thank you for showing it
Another application I user for layer masks quite often: Say you have a cluster, or some paint, or something quite beautiful , but you don't want it all. You can use a layer mask to non-destructively remove what you don't want. And if you change your mind, BINGO! You can just paint over it with white.
Fabulous tutorial and chat Anne! Thank you ... I can't wait to try the emboss/etched technique on a charm!
I didn't make a page, but here it is. This was done in Artisan 5. If anyone wants the instructions, I can post them. It is easy.
Here's one for you @AnneofAlamo ...it wasn't until I added this tag that I thought...yep, the mask threading!
