Hi everyone!!! I am so excited to host today's technique challenge!

Today we're going to focus on creating a background cut-out effect by using inner shadow styles. This is a technique that I really love!! I think it adds dimension to a layout in a really different and unique way.

AND I hope you're going to be pleasantly surprised at how easy this is!!

Here is a layout I created using this technique:

In this layout, I created a cut-out with a shape (the big half circle on the right side) and with text (the word "shot" in the title).

Here's a video that will hopefully walk you through the THREE EASY steps to using this technique:

    ""

Here again are the three simple steps to create cut-outs using inner shadows:

    1. Create a shape or text to use as your cut-out
    2. Apply an inner shadow style to your shape or text
    3. Clip a paper to the shape or text (control+G)

Here are the settings for your inner shadow style:

    For a Deep Shadow
    Blend Mode - Linear Burn
Angle - 120 degrees (should be the same as your drop shadows)
    Distance - 11
    Choke - 0
    Size - 13

    For a Shallow Shadow
    Blend Mode - Linear Burn
Angle - 120 degrees (should be the same as your drop shadows)
    Distance - 5
    Choke - 0
    Size - 9

There is also a tutorial on Peppermint's blog that you can refer to along with the instructions I'm giving you. Check it out here! In Peppermint's post, there is a free download of inner shadow styles that you can use OR create the same effect by applying an inner shadow layer style.

For today's challenge, just create a layout using this technique of creating background cut-outs using inner shadow styles. You can create your cut out with a shape or text, or BOTH...it's totally up to you!

Please follow the Lilypad Gallery Guidelines: Layouts must contain at least 50% TLP products (current or retired product from current designers; templates count as 15%.) Uploads must be less than 250k. List all credits; no off-site linking allowed.

Fun! I've always literally cut out a section of the paper - never thought to use the inner shadow option. Thanks for sharing this technique! I used it for the title on my page:

Here be mine, but I went with using a cut-file on top to add dimension. :-)

I normally only use this technique when it's already included in a template, so for this one I didn't let myself use a template so I could play!!

It's already July but I wanted to do a LO for the June Focus Challenges. So I combined three techniques into one LO! I hope it's ok.
My page is for the following challenges:
June 22 Technique: shadowing transparent elements (the title and the sunglasses)
June 23 Technique: Burn Tool (washi tape)
    June 24 Technique: Background Cut-outs (waves)\
