Giving Hybrid Another Chance V3

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Hiya friends! I hope life finds you doing well this beautiful Friday!!!! I know here in Northern California we are experiencing a bit of a wet start to spring, but its much needed after a dry winter. Before we get started, just a side note .. .have you checked out the store today!? SOME SERIOUSLY YUMMY new goodies at the PAD today!!

So since the last time we chatted I have discovered a whole new layer of hybrid. Can you believe that? Yeah, me either .. honestly! :)

TEMPLATES!!!!!! :) I know who would have thought a paper scrapbooker could use digital templates in an effective way? Here is what I really love about it girls… when you are using digital paper for paper scrapbooking you are needing to print off more paper than you might use. With templates you are ONLY printing what you will use! Awesome right? They way you do this is with the Cameo’s print and cut feature, which I am just over the moon about! I want to start off my saying, I am sure this isn’t the easiest way, its just the way I have been going about it so far! :)

First step of course, is to pick your favorite template! For this one I used one of Amy Martin’s amazing templates!

SKetches: Whip it Up Fast v4

I choose to use the one in the upper right hand corner, I love those little bunting shapes… and HELLO white space… I adore you!

And now for my paper…. I LOVE these bright and cheery papers!

Happy Day Paper’s by Sabrina Dupre

Then I open both of these into Photoshop (or your editing program of choice), and I put the papers into the template as I would for a digital page (for my paper scrapbooking friends out there, if you need a tutorial on how to use a template in general, one of our AMAZING designers, Sahlin Studio’s  here at the pad has a great tutorual on her blog , so make sure to check that out if templates are new to you!) I like to do this to make sure I like the paper placement. I also change any paint splatter etc to match the template, and do my journaling and title work at this point. I love that you can do your journaling at this point, I already know where the papers will go, and sometimes I struggle with journaling if I wait until the last min. becuase I don’t want to “mess” it up! So I take away all the layers except what I am wanting to print (journaling and paint splatters) and change it to 8×8 (or whatever size you want) and print right there in photoshop. Once that prints out I simple cut the paper down to 8×8 and I already have a base and a great start to my layout.

So here is what mine looked like when I printed it.

Then I take the pieces of the template that I am wanting to print and cut (make sure to delete shadows), and I make two copies, one with the actual papers and one with a solid black template. I know this is an extra step, but I think it makes it easier once we get it over into the Cameo. At this point it looked something like this:

and the template with paper

I save both of these as a jpeg and take them into the Silhouette Cameo software. Here is a warning, its going to open up HUGE!!! Just resize it down to the size you are working with (in my case 8×8).  Then I just follow the steps for using a print and cut feature (if this is new to you, please check out THIS AMAZING tutorial from listgirl!) use the black template to trace the shapes, I find that its easier since I often choose papers with lighter prints. Once the shapes are traced, I then slip in the digital paper. Send to printer, and then cut in the Cameo and you have all the pieces for your layout!!!

You can add other elements, your own style, just have fun with it! Here is how this one came out!

You can also check it out on my gallery.

If you made it this far, you deserve a prize!!! Don’t you think? One of my favorite template designers is Valorie Wibbens and she is giving YOU this SWEET template to play around with!!! Isn’t she a sweetie?!

Thank you so much for sticking around and if you make a paper page using a digital template, will you make sure to link us? I would love to see your work of art!

Talk to you soon!

Tutorial | Print & Cut Digi Elements with the Silhouette

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Remember my blog post last month about my Elf Party and how I printed and cut out some elves from Kate Hadfield’s “Santa’s Little Helpers” digital doodles, using my Silhouette digital cutting machine?   Today I’ve recorded a video tutorial on exactly how to use the print & cut function with any of your digital elements!

I’ve had my Silhouette SD machine since October 2009, and I love using it to cut out my digital elements for hybrid projects!  Who needs scissors when the machine will cut it out for you?  :D
This tutorial will work with any of the Silhouette machines (the original, the SD, and now the new Cameo).  You just need to use the free Silhouette Studio software that comes with the machine.

Are you ready for some cutting magic?

After the Silhouette has done its cutting magic, I just carefully remove the cut-out pieces from the cutting mat.

Now I have a bunch of elements and journal cards for my Project Life album!  :)
Digital items from The Lilypad used in the tutorial:

Photoshop Shortcuts: Font Edition

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

There are so many Photoshop Shortcuts out there.  At some point every year I download and print the massive Keyboard Shortcut list that Adobe puts out with each new version of Photoshop.  I read them all and optimistically try to implement them into my workflow but I never stick with it.  They just seem too daunting and I can rarely remember them so I always end up giving up and using the slow method of using the menus.  There are some shortcuts, however, that I do use on a regular basis.  Today I thought I’d share a couple text related shortcuts I use.

Drag Selection

The first thing I do when I want to start using the Text tool is to use the Rectangular Marquee tool to draw a text box.  You can find your Rectangular Marquee tool on the Side Bar.  It looks like a dotted rectangle.

With the Marquee tool, you can click and drag out your text box.  If you want it to be a perfect square, just hold down Shift while clicking and dragging.  Quite often after I’ve created my text box, I want to move it to a new location and then change its size.  However once you release the mouse, you can move your text box, but you cannot resize it.  You have to erase it and create another one.

Shortcut:  If you drag out your text box (do not release the mouse yet) and now hold down Spacebar, it will let you drag the undefined selection to a new location and once there, you can resize the box.

Browse Fonts

Once I have my text box and have typed my journaling, I quite often want to view my journaling using some other fonts to determine which one looks the best.  I used to go up to the Font Toolbar and go up and down the font list choosing different fonts to preview which one is the best.  Not anymore.

Shortcut:  You can test your fonts easily by selecting your text, then clicking your mouse in the Font Family box (seen in blue in the below diagram).  You can now scroll up and down the font list with your mouse and preview how the fonts look in your layout.

Scale Font Size

Once I’ve chosen my font, I quite often want to resize my journaling.  I used to select my journaling and then go up to Font Size in the Text toolbar and try various sizes until I found the right one.  This was so frustrating.  I now have a much easier method.

Shortcut: Select the text you would like to resize and then place your cursor over the Font Size tool like the diagram below.  You can then pull your mouse to the left to make your font size smaller or to the right to make your font size bigger.  Alternatively you could select the text that you want to scale the font size, press Cmd (Ctrl for PC users) + Shift + > or < to increase / decrease font size.

Applying Text

Lastly, I always hated that I couldn’t simply approve and escape text editing mode by pressing the ENTER button rather than having to click that darn check mark every time.

Shortcut: Just press CMD (or Ctrl if on PC) + ENTER and you exit out of text editing mode.  Easy peasy.

I  hope you’ll find the above shortucts useful to your workflow.  If you know of any other great shortcuts, please let me know in the comments.
